About The Resume Host

Understanding the reader's actual task, which is reduction rather than discovery, explains most of what makes a document work and most of the advice that does not.

A person shortlisting for a role has a stack of applications and an afternoon. Their task is not to identify the best candidate, which is not achievable from documents and which they know. Their task is to reduce a large number to a small number that can be interviewed, and the only practical way to do that is to look for reasons to exclude. The first pass is not evaluation. It is elimination, and it is fast.

Once that is understood, a great deal of standard advice reveals itself as addressed to the wrong reader. Advice about conveying personality, demonstrating passion, or telling your story assumes somebody reading attentively for who you are. The first reader is doing something else, and the document has to survive that pass before anybody reads it in the way the advice imagines. Surviving the first pass is a different problem from being impressive, and the techniques are different.

Every applicant is a strong communicator with excellent attention to detail.

Several widespread practices cost applicants a great deal and employers nothing.

The Resume Host is about job application documents and the process they pass through: how they are actually read, what survives a first pass, how recruitment software really works, and where applicant effort produces the most return.
