Chance is the quietest force in an ordinary life, and the one we are worst at reading. This is a magazine about learning to see it clearly.

Stand at a bus stop on a wet morning and you can watch a whole philosophy assemble itself. Three buses arrive together, then nothing for a long while. Someone says the timetable is a fiction. Someone else says the drivers must be doing it deliberately. Almost nobody says the thing that is most likely true: that small delays feed on each other, that a bus running slightly late collects more passengers and falls further behind, and that the bunching we find so insulting is the ordinary output of a system with wobble in it. We are standing in the rain, watching chance do exactly what chance does, and calling it a conspiracy.

This magazine is about that gap. Not about how to think in general, and not about decisions as a discipline, but about the specific and slippery business of chance: what randomness actually looks like when you meet it, why our instincts misread it so reliably, and how much of what we call luck is simply variation we have not learnt to name. Chance is everywhere in a normal week. It is in the traffic light, the queue you chose, the weather that turned, the job advertisement you happened to see on the day you happened to look.

A genuinely random run is far streakier than most people expect, and the streaks mean nothing.

Where and when you arrived shapes outcomes we habitually describe as earned.

Pattern detection is a reflex, not a decision, and it does not switch off in the absence of a pattern.
