About G8 Pals

You were told to expect a career, a mortgage and a slowly worsening back. You were not told that friendship would quietly become an administrative task, and that most people would find that harder than the mortgage.

There is a moment, usually somewhere in the thirties, when a person looks up and realises they have not had an unplanned conversation with a friend in months. Not a fight, not a falling out, nothing dramatic at all. Just a slow reduction, week by week, until the people who once knew the small details of your life now know only the headlines, and only when you post them. It is one of the most common experiences in adult life and one of the least discussed, partly because saying it out loud sounds like an accusation, and partly because everyone assumes the problem is theirs alone.

It is not. The mechanism is structural, and once you see it, a great deal stops feeling like a personal failing. Friendship in childhood and early adulthood was not something you were good at. It was something the environment did to you. You were placed in a room with the same people every day for years, given long stretches of unallocated time, and left there. Under those conditions closeness is close to automatic. Remove the room, remove the repetition, remove the unallocated time, and the same person with the same warmth and the same sense of humour will end up alone on a Saturday, wondering what changed about them.

Proximity, repetition and unstructured time built your old friendships, and adult life removes all three at once.

There is no version of asking a near stranger to do something that does not feel exposing, and waiting for that feeling to pass is a wasted wait.

Most friendships do not end in a rupture, they end in a series of individually reasonable postponements.
