Handy XP is not a repair manual. It is a magazine about the judgement that sits underneath home maintenance: noticing, recording, deciding, and knowing who to call.

There is a moment, familiar to almost everyone who has owned or rented a place to live, when something that had been quietly wrong for months becomes suddenly and expensively urgent. A mark on a ceiling becomes a hole. A door that stuck in August will not close at all by March. A smell that came and went is now the smell of the whole hallway. Nothing changed overnight. What changed was that the house finally raised its voice to a volume that could not be ignored, and by then the cheap version of the problem had already gone, replaced by the version that requires a trade, a quote and a fortnight of disruption.

Handy XP exists in the space before that moment. It is a magazine about looking after a home, and it is built on one deliberate and slightly unfashionable decision: it will not tell you how to fix anything. There are no steps here, no methods, no materials, no measurements. Not because readers are incapable, but because the genuinely useful part of home maintenance, the part almost nobody writes about, is not the doing. It is the judgement. Knowing what you are looking at. Knowing whether it is getting worse. Knowing whether this is a job for you, for somebody, or for somebody licensed.

Your job is to notice that something is different, not to work out why.
