We are good at choosing between options and poor at asking whether the category belongs to us at all. This is a magazine about that earlier question, asked calmly and without instruction.

There is a question that sits before all the familiar ones, and it is quieter than they are. Not which one, not how much, not when, but whether at all. It rarely gets asked, because the moment an option appears in front of us the mind starts comparing, and comparison feels like thinking. You can spend a long afternoon weighing two versions of something you would not miss if both vanished. The comparison is real work, so it passes for a decision. The earlier question, the one about whether this belongs in your life in the first place, does not announce itself. Nothing arrives to prompt it. It has to be asked deliberately, by you, usually at an inconvenient moment.

Look at almost anything you carry, own, attend or maintain and you can usually find the moment it entered. Somebody suggested it. A season required it. It was free, or it came bundled, or the alternative was awkward. What you rarely find is a moment when it was reviewed. Entry has a threshold. Continuation has none. This asymmetry is the whole engine of accumulation, and it works on objects and obligations equally. The shelf and the calendar fill by the same mechanism, which is that adding is an event and keeping is not.

Everything in a life entered once as an option, and almost nothing is ever asked to justify staying.

Most recurring obligations outlive the situation that made them sensible, and nobody notices the moment they stop making sense.

Almost nothing in ordinary life will tell you when you have arrived, so the signal has to be supplied by you.
