About Love U Mother

There is no ceremony, no handover, no clipboard. One ordinary week you are the child, and the next you are the one holding the calendar. This is what that shift actually feels like from the inside.

It rarely begins with a crisis. It begins with a phone call that runs a little longer than usual, a question asked twice, a bill that sat unopened on the hall table for a fortnight. You notice, and then you talk yourself out of noticing, because noticing means something has changed and you would rather it had not. That is the honest opening of most carer stories: not a dramatic turn, but a slow accumulation of small moments that only later arrange themselves into a pattern. By the time you use the word carer about yourself, you have usually been doing the work for a year or more without a name for it.

What makes the shift strange is that it runs against the direction your whole life has pointed. You were the one being organised. Your appointments were remembered by someone else, your washing appeared folded, your worries were absorbed by an adult who seemed inexhaustible. Now you are holding the diary and the questions and the follow up call, and the person who used to hold them for you is on the other side of the table. Nothing in the ordinary run of family life prepares you for the reversal, and nothing about it announces itself as permanent. It simply becomes the new arrangement while you are busy managing it.

Almost everyone can point to one small ordinary incident that they only understood in hindsight.

Most of caring is not dramatic, it is forms, phone calls, and being on hold in your lunch break.

Every difficult conversation you avoid now will happen anyway, under worse conditions.
