A greeting takes two seconds and settles a surprising amount. It confirms that two people have seen each other, and it proposes the terms on which the next few minutes will run.
Consider how little is actually said. A word, a nod, a raised hand, and the whole thing is over before anyone has thought about it. Yet almost everything that follows rests on it. A greeting is the moment two people stop being scenery to one another and become present. Before it, you are a shape in a room. After it, you are somebody who has been acknowledged, and who has acknowledged in return. That is the first job it does, and it is not a small one. Being unseen is uncomfortable in a way that is hard to name, and a greeting is the cheapest and fastest cure for it we have ever devised.
The second job is quieter and more interesting. A greeting proposes a footing. It suggests how formal this is going to be, how close the two of you already are, who is deferring to whom, and how much time is on offer. All of that is carried by tone, by length, by whether a first name is used, by whether the greeting invites a reply or closes itself off. Nobody negotiates any of it out loud. The proposal is made, and the other person either takes it up, adjusts it slightly, or declines it. Within a breath or two, the footing is set, and both people proceed as though it had always been obvious.
Every greeting makes an offer about closeness, formality and time, and the reply either accepts it or quietly renegotiates.
In many places a greeting takes the shape of an enquiry, and the answer expected is not information.
A name is the shortest possible signal that somebody has been attended to as themselves.
