Parents describe the same scene in almost identical words: the folder comes out, the mood drops, and within ten minutes nobody is learning anything. The subject of the argument is rarely the actual reason for it.

Ask a parent what the evening argument is about and they will tell you it is about a worksheet, or a set of sums, or a page that should have taken a quarter of the time it took. Ask again, more slowly, and something else usually comes out. The child was told to start. The child was told again. The tone changed. By the time the work was open on the table, the question in the room was no longer whether a page could be finished but whether the child had any say in their own evening. That is a much bigger question, and it is the one being fought over.

This matters because the two problems have completely different solutions. If the trouble is genuinely the work, then the answer is to look at the work: read the instructions together, find the part that is unclear, and get the child moving again. If the trouble is autonomy, looking at the work makes things worse, because every further instruction confirms the child's sense that this hour belongs to somebody else. Parents who have been at this a while learn to tell the two apart quickly, and they learn that the second kind cannot be won by pressing harder. Pressing harder is exactly the fuel.

The line between the two is easy to cross and hard to see from the inside.

What matters is that the space is clear and repeatable, not that it is dedicated.

There is a large difference between being present and being in charge.
